My dear girlfriend, Mary, came to my house on
her birthday last year with a box. There was an envelope and a $10 bill in it. It was an invitation to join her on a girls' weekend to celebrate her 40th birthday in 2008. The idea is to put money in it all year so the trip will be paid for my the next year. All year long I saved, here and there,
and periodically reminded John that he said
yes to me leaving for 3 days.

Friday morning, Mary made the rounds and picked up 3 of us to drive down to Salado, Texas. She had booked 3 rooms at the Rose Mansion. We met up with her mom and her friend once we were in Salado. The last friend to arrive, Mary Helen, came in while we were out at a play. She hauled in the birthday gift from all of us: a Willowtree nativity set. She spent
who knows how long setting it up. This was not a small feat, given how many pieces there were! Needless to say, Mary loved it, which was the goal. Special thanks to her mom for giving us the suggestion for such a memorable gift!

While we were there, we went to a play, ate at some interesting restaurants, did plenty of shopping, took
LOTS of pictures and sang
happy birthday to Mary at least
5 different times
and locations. Once, we even had half of the Stagecoach Inn

restaurant singing with us! It was SO

FUN!
